Miami, Florida

A multilingual community with a vibrant culture, Miami’s diverse population benefits from a range of program services that address a myriad of perspectives and needs.    Miami’s wealth of existing community development programs – including the Cultural Passport concept in the Miami-Dade Schools, the City of Miami’s “Elevate Miami” initiative, and a medical records information exchange pilot – stand poised to benefit from a connected community program.

The Knight Center’s Connected Community Team has convened Miami leaders in arts & culture, government, health care and education in community workshops to determine priorities and develop initial strategies for bringing broadband access and technology resources to citizens. Institutions are eager to consider synergies across sectors, and the communications process has uncovered a range of collaborative and technological possibilities. Infrastructure operators have stepped forward to facilitate the deployment of broadband access to the underserved community.

While a complete connected community plan for Miami-Dade County remains a work in progress, initial feedback has been promising. Additional events and discussions will shape that interest into a solid community broadband solution based on shared investment, shared benefit and sustainable local ownership.
